Belgium


Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Science Shop / Public Engagement Unit
As medium-sized university with 14.000 students and 3300 staff members, VUB has been a pioneer in public engagement for over 25 years. In 1988 it was the first Flemish university to initiate an on-campus Science Week and in 2002 it has founded the Science Shop initiative in Flanders. Currently, VUB is coordinating all Flemish and Brussels Science Shops and so far has worked with over 300 civil society organisations, delivering around 200 research reports. The Brussels Science Shop – located in the Public Engagement Unit of R&D - has been involved in previous EC Projects “Training and Mentoring of Science Shops” (TRAMS – FP6) and "Public Engagement with Research and Research Engagement with Society" (PERARES – FP7) before the start of EnRRICH. The Public Engagement Unit connects science and society through various initiatives such as after work science cafes, science based youth projects, science festivals etc.

 

France

University of Lyon, Science and Society Department
The Université de Lyon gathers 11 universities and engineering or business schools. This federation of research and higher education institutions located within the Lyon-Saint-Étienne region is home to up to 130.000 students, 11.500 researchers and 6.000 PhD students. Among its main missions is the Science and Society department. Created in 2007, its role is to act as a cultural bridge between the researchers and civil society. 6 females & 2 males work with as main focus the direct impact that scientific activity has on the life of citizens, for example issues related to health, environment and new technologies. Today, the main goal of this department is to become a forum for the experimentation and the modelling of new forms of cultural mediation involving the different actors of society: Cultural events like National Science festival and European Researchers Night; Science and society debates and dialogues; Collaborative research with our Science shop; Research thinking platform: trainings, interdisciplinary meetings…

 

Germany

Bonn Science Shop
Established in 1984 as a registered non-profit organization the WilaBonn (Bonn Science Shop) gives special emphasis to the topics of civil society & sustainability, environment & health, as well as the labour market with a strong focus on renewable energies. When appropriate, Bonn Science Shop cooperates with local universities and other institutions, organizations, Science Shops or stakeholders in Bonn as well as in Germany or on an international level to enable multidisciplinary research, dissemination of results and education. Bonn Science Shop has a gender balanced 30 person staff of whom 12-14 work in research and project contexts. All employees are actively involved in several networks on national or international level. Since 2007 WilaBonn coordinates and runs the International contact point for Living Knowledge, the international Science Shop Network.

 

University of Vechta, Science Shop Vechta/Cloppenburg
The University of Vechta is a relatively new campus university located in Lower Saxony/Germany that offers ten academic programmes to approximately 5,300 students. Areas of research include: education and discipline-specific pedagogies; social sciences, social services; regional development/rural areas; landscape ecology; social, political, cultural and economic change. Its strategic plan identifies internationalisation, gender equality, sustainability and participatory research approaches as essential. Special participative outreach projects have been realised in the Knowledge Transfer Unit and the subsidiary in Cloppenburg. The University of Vechta set up the Science Shop Vechta/Cloppenburg at the end of 2012 as a subsidiary in Cloppenburg. It provides a point of contact between community and the university and mediates between society and research. Service learning is integrated into the curricula, and practical projects and other public events (e.g. museum talks, University for children, open lectures and courses).

 

Hungary

Corvinus University of Budapest, Corvinus Business School
Corvinus University of Budapest defines itself as a research university oriented towards education, where the scientific performance of the academic staff measures up to the international standard and the students can obtain a competitive degree having a standard and knowledge content identical to similar- profile universities and acknowledged on the European Union’s labour market and on a global scale. The University admitting more than 14,000 students offers educational programmes in agricultural sciences, business administration, economics, and social sciences, and most of these disciplines assure it a leading position in Hungarian higher education. At the same time, its key ambition is to display the institution’s uniqueness and to exploit the synergies resulting from professional diversity and from studying multiple disciplines.

Corvinus University of Budapest is committed to institutionalising and developing an innovative teaching and learning practice. The Corvinus Business School is the largest of the six Corvinus University of Budapest faculties and gives home to 6 800 students. It is a centre for education and research in all fields of managerial sciences. It is heavily engaged with exploring business school’s social impact, and an active member of PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education). It puts strong emphasis on business ethics, CSR, and sustainability issues in the curriculum. Courses on Innovation Management are an integral part of the bachelor, master and postgraduate studies.

 

Ireland

University College Cork (UCC)
University College Cork (UCC), founded in 1845, is one of Ireland's leading research institutions. Its research income is consistently one of the highest in the country. The University offers a research-led curriculum that attracts the highest calibre of Irish and international students.

The Community-Academic Research Links initiative, CARL, is located at UCC and invites non-profit voluntary or community organisations (CSOs) to suggest potential research topics that can be pursued by students on their behalf across a wide range of academic disciplines in UCC. CARL's mission is to provide independent, participatory research support in response to concerns experienced by civil society. CARL promotes the community engagement of staff and students and addresses the "third mission" outlined in the national strategy on higher education in Ireland (Hunt 2011). The CARL coordinators facilitate the CARL projects, liaise with community partners to develop project proposals and helps encourage staff and student participation across the University. CARL is supported by an inter-disciplinary committee. CARL also runs an inter-disciplinary PhD level module on community-based research.

 

Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Access and Civic Engagement Office, and Learning, Teaching and Technology Centre
DIT is one of Ireland's largest university-level institutions. Its core values emphasize student-centred learning, useful knowledge, rigorous processes of discovery and critical enquiry, and support for entrepreneurship and diversity. There are 20.000 students in DIT, and over 2.000 members of staff, with over 800 student and staff researchers. DIT undertakes research that is strongly focused on problem-solving, social development and innovation that advances human knowledge and has an impact on people's lives. DIT's involvement in EnRRICH is coordinated by the Access and Civic Engagement Office and the Learning, Teaching and Technology Centre, which both have a track record of external engagement and supporting curriculum development with community and non-profit partners.

 

Italy

University of Sassari (UNISS), FOIST Laboratory
The University of Sassari was founded in 1558 and today counts a total number of over 18.000 students and about 700 teachers, in 13 departments, study centres and institutes. EnRRICH activities are run by the FOIST Laboratory: a research centre operating within the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. FOIST Lab was founded in 1977 by sociologist Alberto Merler as a documentation and research centre open to both academic and non-academic users. FOISTs’ mission is to educate, train and share knowledge and information with communities, and as such it was designed to support community action and research, as well as to become a point of reference for students and practitioners. FOIST’s research focuses on CBPR with a strong engagement in positive social intervention to promote change through civic participation, solidarity and community empowerment. Nowadays, the connection between research, learning processes and civic engagement is reinforced thanks to strict collaboration with IntHum which is a nonprofit association set up by FOIST in partnership with 4 CSOs within the FP7′s PERARES Project. Both FOIST and IntHum are part of the Living Knowledge network and can also count on extensive research networks, notably in the Mediterranean area, South America and Asia.

 

Lithuania

Vilnius College of Technologies and Design, Strategic Development Department
Vilnius College of Technologies and Design is a state institution of higher education, established in 1954. At present, Vilnius College of Technologies and Design has 4 faculties, the total enrolment is over 3200 students. The College delivers 21 accredited study programmes, 15 of which are technology science-based, 2 are based on social sciences and 4 – on artistic studies. 10 study programmes of the College were accredited by German EVALAG Agency, listed in the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education. Applied research, artistic and consultative activities comprise an integral part of the study process, directed towards compliance with regional and national needs, as well as improvement of quality of the studies. Interested in the increase of demand of the provided services and aiming for the highest possible quality of studies, the College actively cooperates with social partners.

Results of activity of the College in 2012 were acknowledged as the highest among higher education schools of Vilnius region – the College was awarded with special prize – the Statue of Mercury, established by Vilnius Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts.

 

Netherlands

Wageningen University (WU), Education and Competence Studies (ECS)
Wageningen University (WU) is an international leading institution in the Netherlands conducting multi-disciplinary research and academic educational activities in the domain of the living environment and healthy food. Research and education are based on a fundamental scientific approach and accordingly strongly geared toward application in practice. This is achieved through the close collaboration between different fields of expertise including both natural and social sciences and by working closely together with governments, the business community and societal stakeholders.
The chair group Education and Competence Studies (ECS) has a unique and respected position worldwide in the field of learning, education and competence development for human resources and sustainable development. The group conducts scientific research and educational activities on competence development and learning within themes such as sustainability, innovation, entrepreneurship, capacity building, social responsibility, social learning and intercultural communication.

 

Spain

IrsiCaixa, Unit of Public Engagement on Health Research
IRSICAIXA is an internationally recognised institute of research on health, founded in 1995 by the Foundation “La Caixa” and the Department of Health of the autonomous Catalan government. IRSICAIXA incorporates over 50 investigators who focus their research on developing new therapies, vaccines and clinical studies and on basic research. IRSICAIXA is located within the Hospital Germans Trias I Pujol, where more than 2,000 professionals from different institutions work in the advancement of biomedical sciences, and works alongside the most prestigious international research centres. Its publications are among those with the most impact in their field.

The Unit of Public Engagement on Health Research was designed to support research institutions working on biomedical sciences in the development of their R&D+I following the guidelines established by the European Commission for what it defined as Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). The Public Engagement Unit focuses on:

  1. Public engagement: to inform, facilitate dialogue, consultation and collaboration, through the organisation of outreach events and reflective workshops, and the creation of a Community Advisory Board, among other activities.
  2. Science Education: to decrease the gap between research and education, and to promote RRI among the younger population. We develop educational portals on health research in collaboration with research institutions in Europe, offering innovative multimedia educational resources and hands-on activities to be run in schools and science museums (serious games, virtual experiments, videos, lesson plans, dialogue games, etc. ). Together with our partners, we organise workshops of experiments, educational, dialogue events and courses for teachers at different science museums and research institutions around Europe.
  3. Science communication of the R&I developed in IRSICAIXA, and of the projects we develop: social media management, web development and management, public and mass media relations, etc.
  4. Training of scientists on RRI aspects: the Unit offers courses for undergraduate and post-graduate courses on RRI, public engagement and science communication.

 

UK

Queens University Belfast (QUB), Science Shop
Queen's University Belfast was founded in 1845 and is an international centre of research and education and a major part of the fabric of Northern Ireland (NI).  Queen's is one of the top 25 most international universities in the world according to Times Higher Education and is a member of the Russell Group of 24 leading UK research-intensive universities. The Science Shop at Queen's was established in 1989 and is based in Careers, Employability and Skills. It works with CSOs across NI to develop research projects suitable for students to carry out as part of their degrees. It has a particular strength in social and environmental sciences, working with students across academic departments including Management, Engineering, Architecture, Geography, Sociology and  Social Policy. In 2014-15, they engaged 270 students in completing 64 projects for 37 different CSOs  across NI, and worked across 10 academic Schools and 23 academic pathways to deliver these projects at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels.   QUB Science Shop was a founding member of the Living Knowledge Network and has been involved in several European Commission funded Science Shop Networking projects.
