Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal, Spain)

ISGlobal's mission is to improve global health and promote health equity through excellence in research and the translation and application of knowledge. The institute, which originated in a joint initiative of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and the University of Barcelona, has amassed over 30 years of experience in the field of global health. The pivotal mechanism of its work model is the transfer of knowledge generated by scientific research to practice, a task undertaken by the Training, Innovation, and Policy and Global Development departments.

Role in the Project

ISGlobal will lead the coordination and management of the InSPIRES programme in WP1, as well as the research on impact evaluation activities in WP6, and communication, dissemination and exploitation endeavours in WP7. ISGlobal will also participate in other WPs.

 

Environmental Social Sciences Research Groups Ltd. (ESSRG, Hungary)

ESSRG is a small research and development company established by researchers of different disciplines looking for autonomy and enjoying working together on the boundaries of environmental and social sciences. ESSRG aims to apply and develop social science research methods in order to assist communities and decision makers with their efforts whereby transforming our societies towards social justice and ecological sustainability. 

Fellows of ESSRG are actively engaged in different global and European scientific networks, particularly the International and European Societies for Ecological Economics (ESSRG is the Hungarian contact point) and the Environment & Society Research Network of the European Sociological Association (participating in the scientific board), the Living Knowledge and the Science Café networks (acting as Hungarian contact points) and AlterNET, Europe’s biodiversity, ecosystem and ecosystem services research network (participating in the scientific board). 

Our team contributes to global initiatives, such as the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) providing our time and experience to the work programme of different expert groups, task forces and the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel (MEP) of IPBES.

Role in the Project

ESSRG will lead WP2 dedicated to the baseline research, and the development of the database of most relevant SS projects. They will also play a significant role in WP through the implementation of pilot SS 2.0 projects. They will be involved in WP4 which consist in the growth of SS and mentoring of their corresponding assigned region. ESSRG will work hand by hand with WP6 on the impact evaluation. 

 

Fundació Privada Institut de Recerca de la Sida-Caixa (IRSICaixa, Spain) /OJO

IRSICaixa is an internationally recognised institute of research on health, founded in 1995 by the Foundation “La Caixa” and the Department of Health of the autonomous Catalan government. IRSICaixa incorporates over 50 investigators who focus their research on developing new therapies, vaccines and clinical studies and on basic research. IRSICaixa is located within the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, where more than 2,000 professionals from different institutions work in the advancement of biomedical sciences, and works alongside the most prestigious international research centres. 

The Unit of Public Engagement on Health Research was designed to support research institutions working on biomedical sciences in the development of their R&D+I following the guidelines established by the European Commission for what it defined as Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). The Public Engagement Unit focuses on: Public engagement, Science Education, Science communication, and Training on RRI.

Role in the Project

IRSICaixa is the leader of the WP4 on Implementation of Science Shops around Europe and beyond. IRSICaixa, as expert in RRI, will also contribute to the WP: 2, 3, 5 and 6, with significant contributions in training activities (WP5) and dissemination (WP7). 

 

Université de Lyon (UDL, FRANCE)

The Université de Lyon gathers in its new framework 11 universities and engineering or business schools. This federation of research and higher education institutions located within the Lyon-Saint-Étienne region is home to up to 130,000 students, 11,500 researchers and 6,000 PhD students. Among its main missions is the Science and Society department. Created in 2007, its role is to act as a cultural bridge between the researchers and civil society. Ten persons (six females & four males) work on a main focus: the direct impact that scientific activity has on the life of citizens, for example issues related to health, environment and new technologies. As a CCSTI (Centre for Scientific, Technical and Industrial Culture), the department is a place of experimentation and modelling of new forms of science communication, enhancing the dialogue between all the actors of society.

Today, the main goal of this department is to become a forum for the experimentation and the modelling of new forms of cultural mediation involving the different actors of society: Cultural events and activities like National Science festival, European Researchers Night; Science and society debates and dialogues: Workshops, Professional seminar, Public Debate, Valorization; Access to research with our science shops; Research thinking platform: animation of a Science and Society commission, focus groups, trainings, organize interdisciplinary meetings

Role in the Project

UdL is the leader of the WP5 on teaching and training, and will also contribute to the WP 2, 3, 5 and 6. As partner in the EnRRICH EU project and due its strong expertise in SS and RRI, UdL will play a key role in mentoring, together with VU future SS structures, and it will be a key player in developing the North- African hub of SS.

 

The VU Institute for Research on Innovation and Communication in the Health and Life Sciences (VU, The Netherlands)

The VU University Amsterdam (legal entity: Stichting VU-VUmc) is one of the leading research universities in Europe. The VU houses 12 faculties, 14 interdisciplinary research institutes and is participant in 40 accredited research schools. In total, the VU employs over 1,750 research FTE and publishes more than 6,650 academic articles, monographs and books per year. The VU Institute for research on innovation and communication in the health and life sciences, is part of the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (FALW). The VU Institute has wide expertise in studying and designing science-society interfaces to contribute to a robust understanding of social innovation; enrich science with increased societal legitimacy, research utilisation and societal awareness of how innovations may benefit the sustainability and equity of societies. Research at the VU Institute specifically focuses on the meaningful exchange of knowledge and expertise between scientific and non-scientific groups and the reflexive monitoring of such processes. VU developed the multi-stakeholder Interactive Learning and Action approach to Responsible Research and Innovation, which has been applied in fields such as medical biotechnology, ecological genomics, neurosciences, animal production, disease-specific health research, sustainable development, synthetic biology, and science education. 

Role in the Project

VU is the leader of the WP3 on the co-Creation, development and piloting of new SS 2.0 models and methods. As the most experienced partner in SS, VU will also contribute to the rest of WPs.

 

Universita degli Studi die Firenze (UNIFI, Italy)

The University of Florence (Università degli Studi di Firenze) is an Italian public research university located in Florence, Italy.  One of the largest and oldest universities in the country, it comprises 12 schools and 24 departments, and has about 60,000 students enrolled

The Centre for the Study of Complex Dynamics (CSDC) is an inter-departmental structure of the University of Florence.  It has the goal of promoting and coordinating research among the departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science, Biology, Information Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Education Science and Psychology, Medicine. The director of the department is Prof. Roberto Livi, and the administrative aspects are managed by the department of Physics.

Role in the Project

UNIFI role will be key in two main aspects of InSPIRES: establishment of the Italian network of SS) in order to expand the SS models across Italy (WP4) and the assessment on how further PE engagement activities could be integrated into SS 2.0 model. Indeed, their experience and expertise in Science Cafés will be fundamental, as well as their knowledge on fundamental sciences, Internet Science and the management of the medias tools. 

 

Institut Pasteur Tunis (IPT, Tunisia)

Created in 1893 IPT is a public health institution overseen by the Ministry of Health. It has three missions (Public health and diagnostis, Manufacturing of vaccines and sera, Research and training). IPT plays an important role in policy dialogue at national and international levels; its Director General and scientific staff members are on advisory boards of the Ministry of Health on issues related to health policy and scientific research and technology; eg in case of infectious and genetic diseases. Staff members participate to evaluation and advisory panels in diverse national and international instances including TDR and WHO-EMRO. IPT is member of many regional and international network, Institut Pasteur International Network, ANDI, H3ABionet, NEPAD, Regional (EMRO) training center (WHO-TDR), etc. In this context, IPT welcomes researchers and students from North and Sub-Saharan Africa, and also Middle East. 

Role in the Project

IPT will set up and implement a SS structure and science shops projects (WP3 and WP4) in collaboration with the Center for Research and Water Technologies. They will be InSPIRES gateway to the African continent. As a member of several regional and international networks, IPT will be the main partner in developing the SS North-African hub. They will also actively contribute to the organization of training activities (WP5) and to the dissemination and communication activities (WP7).

 

Ciencia y Estudios Aplicados para el Desarollo en Salud y medio ambiente (CEADES, Bolivia)

CEADES (Ciencia y Estudios Aplicados para el Desarrollo en Salud y Medio Ambiente) Foundation is an non-profit institution that promote, develop investigation and intervention projects , that also provides technical support and tools to improve health care access in vulnerable population, mainly for neglected tropical diseases and environmental studies.   CEADES have many studies in collaboration with “Faculty of Medicine – San Simon University” and “J. Misael Saracho University”, and other international institutions with focus in Health Research.

Since 2009 CEADES has worked together with ISGlobal (Spain) to develop a collaborative project called "Platform for the comprehensive care of patients with chronic Chagas disease" focused on modeling care for the so far neglected Chagas disease patients. Besides patient care, the Platform promotes training and research activities. Currently, the Platform has six sites in Bolivia which gives us the opportunity to perform large collaborative studies, including clinical trials. 

CEADES has worked with DNDi and ISGlobal in the performance of the clinical trials of E1224 and Fexinidazol against Chagas disease. Besides, we have been involved in the studies: “Efficacy of immunocromatography/HAI-ELISA in diagnosis for Chagas disease" and "New tools for early diagnosis of myocardial injure and evaluation of Chagas disease treatment".

Role in the Project

CEADES will be involved in WP2 to establish a research baseline in project implemented with CSOs and regional actors. They will implement SS projects in Bolivia, being the main partner to develop the South-American SS hub in the context of WP4. CEADES will collaborate in implement the Latin America summer school, registered as a task in WP5.They will actively contribute to dissemination and communication activities (WP7).
