Conference Season is approaching one of its highlights!

In Dublin, DIT is hosting the 7th Living Knowledge Conference which addresses the integration of community based partnerships into learning and teaching for RRI. The conference will be the platform for discussions about the engagement of Higher Education Institutes and researchers with civil society actors. And it will be a place and opportunity for dialogues which are not only about reaching any conclusions; but also about generating questions, which highlight the areas that need to be looked at in more detail. As with all Living Knowledge Conferences excellent opportunities for networking will be provided. I am hoping to welcome you in Dublin for an exciting exchange. Be Inspired!

Run-up to 7th Living Knowledge Conference

The conference, as part of the EnRRICH project, will be hosted by Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland, from 22-24 June. The team is looking forward to welcoming all delegates next week. For those of you who can’t attend please join the conference online for the Plenary Sessions which will be streamed live. Late online registration to attend the conference is possible until 17th of June at the latest.

Good Practices and Case Studies - RRI in Curricula

As part of the EnRRICH project good practices and case studies that demonstrate the embedding of RRI in modules and courses were identified. EnRRICH members at 11 higher education institutions, one research institute and one civil society organisation therefore consulted with lecturers and directors of education in higher education institutions about RRI and its elements in the curriculum. A special focus is set on the collaboration with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the courses and modules.

Field trip to Groningen: Workshop ‚Outside the Box’

On May 3, 2016, students of the University of Vechta visited Science Shops in the „Green Office“ of the University of Groningen. The students attend the seminar ‘Outside the Box – research with people from the region’ hold by Prof. Dr. Marco Rieckmann and Christine Gröneweg. The seminar is organized as part of the EnRRICH Project. It reflects on RRI dimensions and Science Shop work. In conjunction with practice partners scientific questions regarding sustainable regional development are elaborated by the students. In order to experience Science Shop work ‘live’, the students’ field trip was organized.




Saskia Visser, Dr. Henk Mulder and Dr. Karen Re from the Science Shops for literary studies and science reported on their work with participatory research projects and welcomed the group with an interesting and interactive program. During an open round of questions, the German visitors were able to exchange views with Dutch students who work on current scientific research projects originating from society. The visit ended with a sunny city walk through Groningen, accompanied by Saskia Visser.

EnRRICH at the "Responsible Universities" Event in Vechta, Germany

A public symposium on Responsible Universities („Hochschule in Verantwortung“) will be held at the University of Vechta on June 30, 2016. The event aims to bring together regional policy makers and science founders, enterprises, NGOs, scientists, students, university staff members and interested citizens. Concepts, projects and practical examples on different aspects of social responsibility and public engagement of scientific institutions will be introduced and discussed in presentations and workshops. The main focus is on the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) concept, involving the EnRRICH project as one important topic. Christine Gröneweg, Marco Rieckmann, Norbert Steinhaus and Daniel Ludwig from the German part of the EnRRICH consortium will be active as presenters and workshop leaders. Conference language will be German.

450 high school students do research on how to improve their emotional well-being

The Xplore Health project, a joint initiative of IrsiCaixa and Obra Social "la Caixa”, has finished its first pilot project on Community Based Participatory Research on Mental Health promotion. The so-called Healthy Mind project has been developed with the collaboration of the European projects EnRRICH and RRI Tools. The final aim of the project has been to design and implement health interventions “for and with students” empowering them to engage in research processes and participatory governance to promote good health habits at school.

The topic of Mental Health was chosen by more than a 1.000 students from fifteen pilot Xplore Health secondary schools of Catalonia, who identified the depression and the stress as the health problems that concerned them the most. 450 students are engaged in the participatory research project "for them and with them" called Healthy Mind. They collaborated with higher education students and scientists from four research centres and universities. The project ended with the production of a Decalogue of proposals for improving prevention in this field. The students and researchers presented the results in a final congress in front of representatives of NGOs and policy makers.

Trainings on RRI have started

The training of the RRI Tools project aims to help you make sense of RRI, to bring the concept to life and help you understand how it can be useful in your own work. Organised in a modular format, it ranges from a half-day to several day-long workshops. As well as the pre-arranged calendar of training, ​you can commission the project to deliver training at a time and location that suits you.


The training modules are open-access, available for you to deliver your own training. RRI aims to create a society in which R&I work towards sustainable, ethically acceptable, and socially desirable outcomes, addressing several agendas needed for a fair and just society. The training and Toolkit will help you to be part of it. RRI aims to open up the innovation processes to everyone. So whether you are a policy maker, researcher, educator, business person or a member of a civil society organisation, the training will be of interest to you.

Ark of Inquiry: Bringing RRI in science education in Europe

Ark of Inquiry is a research and development project funded by the European Commission, involving 13 project partners from 12 countries. The ambitious goal of Ark of Inquiry is to raise awareness of pupils to RRI by promoting an interest in science through inquiry learning. In the last months the project partners have been focusing on enriching the project platform with a number of activities that can be performed by teachers in schools and educators in informal learning premises. They are supported by digital tools for teachers and teacher training sessions around Europe.

Report on "Creating Living Knowledge"

How can community and university expertise best be combined to better understand how communities are changing, and the roles that communities might play in responding to the problems and possibilities of the contemporary world? This is the question posed by the Connected Communities Programme, a  UK Research Council Programme led by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Since 2010, the programme has funded over 300 projects, bringing together over 700 academics and over 500 collaborating organisations on topics ranging from festivals to community food, from everyday creativity to care homes, from hyperlocal journalism to community energy. The report focuses on the lessons that might be learned from the programme about how to bring together expert and public knowledges – a trend in both universities and the wider policy and public spheres that we might call the ‘participatory turn’.

Community-Based Research: Teaching for Community Impact

Community-Based research (CBR) refers to collaborative investigation by academics and non-academic community members that fosters positive change on a local level. Despite recent trends toward engaged scholarship, few publications demonstrate how to effectively integrate CBR into academic course work or take advantage of its potential for achieving community change. CommunityBased Research: Teaching for Community Impact fills these gaps by providing: * An overview of language and methods used by professionals engaged in CBR * A framework for orienting CBR toward concrete community outcomes * Effective ways to integrate CBR into course content, student-driven projects, and initiatives spanning disciplines, curricula, campuses and countries * Lessons learned in working toward positive outcomes for students and in communities.

Essential Features of Responsible Governance of Agricultural Biotechnology

Agricultural biotechnology continues to generate considerable controversy. The article argues that to address this controversy, serious changes to governance are needed. The new wave of genomic tools and products (e.g., CRISPR, gene drives, RNAi, synthetic biology, and genetically modified [GM] insects and fish), provide a particularly useful opportunity to reflect on and revise agricultural biotechnology governance. In response, five essential features to advance more socially responsible forms of governance are presented. In presenting these, the authors hope to stimulate further debate and action towards improved forms of governance, particularly as these new genomic tools and products continue to emerge.

New UNESCO Chair Resources on Training in Community-based Research

The UNESCO Chair in CBR, in partnership with the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability (IRES) at the University of British Columbia are pleased to share new resources on training in Community-Based Research.  These products are some of the outcomes of the SSHRC funded 'Building the Next Generation of Community-based Researchers (“The NextGen project”) between 2014-2016. The resources comprise

1. a video collection of traning in Community Based Research

2. an annotated Bibliography: Training in Community Based Research (CBR): Water Governance.

“Expect Everything” website launched

Hypatia (a Horizon 2020 funded project aimed at engaging 13-18 year old teenagers) has launched Expect Everything, a dissemination campaign targeted at teenagers and aimed at engaging and captivating the interest of teenage girls in STEM (young Europeans, both boys and girls, still have very little idea of the variety of careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics). It takes over and builds on the legacy of the European Commission’s “Science: it's a girl thing” campaign, addressing and inviting teenagers to Expect Everything! This slogan embodies the spirit of STEM and encourages teenagers to stand up and say “yes, I do expect everything in my life! Equally, everything is expected from me!”
On the same date, the Hypatia Project launched hypatiaproject.eu, a website dedicated to teachers, head teachers, museums, industry sector and researchers that offers them tools and activities that will empower the different stakeholders to teach and communicate STEM subjects in a more gender inclusive way and to address gender unbalance in STEM professions. Further, the website will present key information about the project, ongoing events and milestones.

Call for Papers: Open Access Journal SOCIENCE

The new inter- and trans disciplinary “Open Access Journal SOCIENCE” invites to send in articles dealing with the topics science and society, especially concerning education for sustainable development and the role of transformative processes of learning for a socio-economic change. The new journal aims to support applied and responsible research that encourages an open and critical dialogue between science and society. For the first edition of SOCIENCE the focus will be put on articles concerning theoretical, conceptual or empirical background in the fields of trans disciplinary research and sustainability processes of science and society, especially those focused on exchange of knowledge and educational processes.
The deadline to hand in papers is June 15, 2016 already, however it is only the first edition and there may be more to come. Date of publication of the first edition will be the mid- October 2016. Interested Authors are asked to submit their articles via the system of electronic submission of articles.

4th SecurePART newsletter released

SecurePART is a project that contributes to increase the engagement and involvement of civil society organisations in EU-funded security research in order to improve the capacity for social, non-technological innovation and to address the problem of acceptance of security research outputs by wider society. The fourth newsletter announces that the project is now successfully coming to an end and furthermore introduces news about the following issues: the SecurePART final conference, their action plan, recommendation on permanent institutional set-ups for CSO engagement in security research, the Security JAM Event and other results.

SYNENERGENE: Responsible Research and Innovation in Synthetic Biology
